The vibrant oils of Stephen Duren pair explorations in landscape genre painting alongside rich scenic color-field abstractions that surprise. Composed of amber and jewel toned facets of color, Duren’s paintings revel in the unfettered freshness of marks so innate as to seem suspended within the quiet natural vistas of his imagery.
Born and reared in northern California, Duren attended the San Francisco Art Institute in the 1970s, devoting much of his time to working plein air – outside, directly from nature. During this period, the artist absorbed countless textures and patterns from the landscape, including the particular quality of light that is unique to California. This visual vocabulary became the foundation for Duren’s paintings as he moved from realism to abstraction. Duren relocated to West Michigan in 1978, where he has taught in area colleges and continues his life-long vocation as a painter to this day.
