Christopher strunk artist statement...

I've been making paintings for as long as I can remember. It is an obsession. I can't help it. There are so many things to see and so many ways to focus; it can all be overwhelming having to sort through it all. I love Art history. I am captivated by paintings. I've settled on nature as a subject because there are so many of these things in nature that I feel the need to paint. Elements of nature have a certain immediate universal appeal.

I stare at my paintings more than I work on them in process. They are hung in different settings, on different walls. They are turned against the wall and ignored. They sit for months sometimes, untouched. I live with them, thinking and looking, agonizing over the slightest change. I sit and wait for the moment to broaden into an inspiration, and then conjure the will to work. Sometimes the changes are quite sudden and drastic. One of the greatest challenges is to free myself from my own control, my own vision, to let the painting develop itself.
